My Quest to Visit Every Sydney Beach

List of Sydney Beaches

How many beaches are there in Sydney?

Well, by my count, there are 179 that are truly swimmable – meaning they’re both safe and clean from pollutants. I’ve left out the ones with surf considered too dangerous, like Little Makaha and Butterbox on Long Reef Point, as well as those where the water quality is poor or likely contaminated, such as the stretches along the middle and upper Georges River extending up towards Chipping Norton Lake.

It also excludes the many small pockets of sand found throughout Port Jackson and Sydney’s rivers. For a beach to make the list, it needs at least twenty metres of sand that stays dry even at high tide – in line with the standards used by coastal scientists.

I’m also counting single stretches of continuous sand as one beach, even if they have multiple surf lifesaving clubs (SLSCs) along them or are commonly referred to as separate beaches. For example, Greenhills, Wanda, Elouera, and North Cronulla, despite being separate SLSCs, are all listed as Cronulla, while Dee Why and Long Reef are combined as Dee Why–Long Reef.

You’ll find a list of Sydney’s beaches below, grouped by region: Pittwater, Northern Ocean, Port Jackson, Eastern Ocean, Botany Bay and the Georges River, Southern Beaches, the Royal National Park, and even Western Sydney.
